"The Longform Editions label is an embarrassment of riches — an embarrassment, at least, in that they are so prolific that I rarely manage to absorb a full set of their releases before a new crop of four drops. This month's are particularly strong.
"In The Enormous Room, Alexis Georgopoulos — aka Arp, who changes styles often but does great work in all of them — returns to his most minimalist tendencies.
He began the piece as a simple piano improvisation as a reaction to a much more electronic production, then fleshed it out with wordless voices (cf. Laurie Anderson's breathy syllables at the beginning of "O Superman") and skeletal strings.
He writes of pursuing a piece "that would hover in that liminal space between dreamstate and lucid consciousness. At times, I felt I was outside at dusk, under that vivid deep blue that happens just before the stars come out." Having looped his piece in half-sleep of an early-morning flight, I can testify to his success.
